Melbourne Water is owned by the Victorian Government. We manage Melbourne's water supply catchments, remove and treat most of Melbourne's sewage, and manage rivers and creeks and major drainage systems in and around Melbourne.
Our operating area extends from Melbourne's water supply catchments high up in Yarra Ranges, to the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port, north to Yan Yean and west to Werribee. This boundary will be expanded under the Government's Securing our water future together action plan.
We are a significant business, managing $8.1 billion of natural and built assets. Our annual operating revenue of more than $500 million is earned from water supply, sewage treatment and drainage rates. This is used to fund our operations and infrestucture projects including water, sewerage and drainage upgrades, as well as projects to improve and protect Melbourne's rivers and creeks. Thiess has constructed over 50 dams in the last 45 years. Thiess' first major dam constriction project was for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. Today, Thiess continues to build new dams and weirs, and strengthen and upgrade exising dams throughout Australis, New Zealand and South East Asia.
