ANCOLD members may participate in the work of a variety of ANCOLD technical working groups. Technical working groups prepare reports and papers for publication by ANCOLD. They also assist ICOLD technical committees in preparing ICOLD Bulletins. Technical working group activities are summarised below. Contact the convenor listed for more information about their work.
Guidelines on Business Management of Dams
The development of this guideline is currently on hold and the committee is in recess pending a review of the requirement and priority by the Executive.
Develop guidelines which assist owners and managers in the planning and management of dams to meet community expectations and corporate business objectives; provide a systematic process for the planning and management of dams; and provide an overall framework to link ANCOLD guidelines and other documents in the planning and management of dams.

Guidelines on Design Criteria for Concrete Gravity Dams
Revision of the 1991 ANCOLD Guidelines on Design Criteria for Concrete Gravity Dams, which are now considered too conservative in areas; do not provide sufficient guidance and/or are not in accordance with the latest practices.
Guidelines on Risk Assessment
Revision of the 1994 ANCOLD Guidelines on Risk Assessment in view of the considerable progress in the practice since the guidelines were published.
The revised Guidelines on Risk Assessment were published in October 2003 and were launched at a special workshop held in Launceston as part of the 2003 Conference on Dams. The guideline was the culmination of eight years work and all members of ANCOLD owe a vote of thanks to Len McDonald, as convenor, and his working group for their efforts over that time. It was extremely worthwhile and is a very useful contribution to the industry. However users of the guideline should be aware that, since the publication of the guideline, the following errata have been identified:
in Guideline G10-1, page 46, right column, at 0.6 down, the following was inadvertently deleted after "wherein it was held that:"
"Reasonably practicable" is a narrower term than "physically possible" and seems to me to imply that a computation must be made by the owner in which the quantum of risk is placed on one scale and the sacrifice involved in the measures necessary for averting the risk (whether in money, time or trouble) is placed on the other, and that if it be shown that there is a gross disproportion between them – the risk being insignificant in relation to the sacrifice – the defendants discharge the onus on them.
The Guideline was reprinted with corrections in May 2007

The Guidelines were published in March 2000.
Guidelines on Assessment of the Consequences of Dam Failure
Preparation of guidelines that provide a structured approach to the determination of the consequences of dam failure; input on the consequences for risk assessment studies or business risk determinations; input into the process for establishing dam safety management priorities; and assistance in determining the allocation of resource needs for the investigation and design of new dams or the assessment of existing dams.
The Guidelines were published in mid 2000.
Guidelines on Tailings Dams Design, Construction and Operation
