Chairman:  Neil Blaikie
  Neil has 35 years experience in the management of major infrastructure assets, predominately in Hydro Electric Power Generation. This experience has been gained in Australia, New Zealand and North America. Neil has held the positions of Principal Civil Engineer, Dam Safety Manager, Principal Engineer - Asset Management and Business Risk Manager for Hydro Tasmania. Neil has contributed to ANCOLD though his roles as Junior and Senior Vice Chairman, convenor of the 2003 conference, and as co-author of ANCOLD's Guidelines on Dam Safety Management. Neil is a member of the ICOLD Operations, Maintenance and Rehabilitation Technical Committee and was a member of the consultative team that contributed to drafting Tasmanian dam safety legislation
   
   
   
   
   

 

 

 
   
 Senior Vice Chairman: Ian Landon-Jones
 

Ian is the General Manager, Technical Services and is an Executive member of the Sydney Catchment Authority.  He is responsible for the dam safety management programme for the major dams in the Sydney region.  Ian is also a member of two ICOLD technical committees and a committee member of the NSW Dams Safety Committee.  Some key interests relate to the application of risk assessment, the impacts of underground coal mining on surface infrastructure and international regulation of dam safety.

   
   
   
   
   

 

 

Junior Vice Chairman: Steven Fox
   
A Civil Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, Steve’s 25 year career in the water industry has mostly involved roles in major infrastructure projects.
 
Originally from Victoria, Steve currently manages GHD’s Perth Water Business Group.  He has held leadership roles in organisations with responsibility for the design, construction and the ongoing operation of large dams and his key interests include fostering improved project management arrangements and effective community consultation.
 
Steve is also on the Committee that is producing the new ANCOLD Guidelines on the Consequence Categories for Dams
   
   
   
 
   
 
   

 

 

 

Past Chairman: David Stewart

 

David Stewart is a civil/geotechnical engineer with 25 years of professional experience in major water infrastructure and dams projects throughout Australia and internationally.  He was elected as Chairman of ANCOLD in November 2006 and has been a member of ICOLD's Committee on Dam Safety since 2004.

He is the Managing Director of Goulburn-Murray Water, a graduate and Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and a past regional Chairman.  He is convenor of the ANCOLD Working Group on Business Management, a Member of the International Committee on Dam Safety and co-author of international guidelines on Dam Safety Management for the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD).  He is also a Director of the Board of River Murray Water, which is the asset and water management division of the Murray Darling Basin Commission and a Fellow and past Director of Fairley Leadership.

Treasurer: David Brett

   
David Brett is a Principal Engineer Dams and Geotechnical Engineering with GHD based in Hobart. David has more than 30 years experience in major dam and water engineering projects throughout Australia, including extensive experience in roller compacted concrete (RCC) for dams, specialist knowledge of foundation grouting for dams.
Over recent years David has been particularly involved in waste management for the mining industry including tailings disposal and mitigation of acid rock drainage from mine sites.
Examples of dam projects include:
·         Burnett River Dam 50 m high, 400,000 m3 RCC dam has a design flood of 100,000 cumecs.
·         Meander Dam, 50 m high 150,000 m3 RCC
·         Main Creek Tailings Dam 70 m earth and rockfill dam at Savage River Mine on Tasmania’s northwest coast to contain an estimated 12 million m3 of tailings by staged raising
·         Princess Creek Tailings Dam, 80 m earth and rockfill dam at Mt Lyell Mine for Copper Mines of Tasmania, staged construction to hold 100,000,000 t of tailings
In addition, David has been responsible for projects achieving Engineering Excellence Awards from IE Aust including
·         Water Management at the Worsley Alumina Refinery, and
·         Rehabilitation of Jarosite damps at the Nyrstar Zinc Refinery, Hobart.
David is currently convenor of an ANCOLD sub-committee reviewing the Guideline on Tailings Dam Design, Construction and Operation.
